Creative Documentaries Based On Archives
By Béatrice De Pastre

Béatrice De Pastre, head of the  Archive Department and Cinematic Heritage in the National Cinematographic and animated image Centre (CNC) has run a number of workshops hosted by Dahshur Workshops:

  • Creating with Archives , 1st-6th November 2017
  • Creative Documentaries Based On Archives, 18th-23rd April 2016

Both of the these  workshops explored how participants could select and merge archival material, video, audio or visual, in order to enrich the narrative elements of their feature documentary or fiction project, while also maintaining a structured and coherent rendering. Concerns regarding copyrights were also addressed. The workshop focused on the utilisation of old footage (film archives, amateur films or photography) and how participants can find ways to recycle this footage and use it in new works.

Re-using Images from the Past: Adding Sound to Silent Films, 7th-9th October 2017

This three-day workshop took place at Dahshur Workshops’ office headquarters in downtown Cairo. The workshop gave participants the opportunity to explore and examine images, composition, and the relationship between sound and image. Participants explored a variety of subjects and exercises including listening exercises, analysing silent short films, montage, recording sound, adding sound to image and preparing soundtracks.

    Creative Documentaries Based On Archives

The filmmakers’ approach in the Middle East region has changed, recently, regarding genre cinema. It is no longer associated only with commercial films or mainstream Hollywood films. We believe that the region is abundant with rich stories ideal for genre treatment and that Genre Cinema can be the savior of independent Cinema in the region.

This program is for directors and scriptwriters. Five feature fiction film projects will be selected to participate in the program. The participants will work with the script consultant to develop their projects over ten months in a program that consists of three workshops, each for five days.

The program aims to develop original screenplays with well-developed characters, strong dramaturgy and consistent narrative and creative visual style that have the ability to address local and international audiences. The program also will connect the participants with producers, directors, local and regional film festivals and other influential industry regional experts to push the projects forward to the production stage.

During each workshop, participants will develop their cinematic vision and discuss the narrative approach and visual style of their projects. They will work on developing their script and also their film files (loglines, synopses, treatments, etc.) to be ready for producers and financiers. They will benefit from the collective wisdom of all participating colleagues as the program’s methodology depends on group sessions, interacting and sharing with the mentor and other participants. All participants will be asked to complete a number of tasks relevant to the development of their projects. They will be asked to read other participants work, as well, to enrich the discussions, as an essential component of the program.
