The workshop encompassed a comprehensive approach to visual and sound production, featuring expert guidance from professionals in the field. Ahmed Gaber, the sound editor, dedicated two days to sharing his extensive knowledge of sound editing with the participants.

Tarek Hefni led the workshop, focusing on the visual elements and providing practical insights. To ensure realistic budgeting and production guidance, Muhammad Taymour offered his expertise and support to the projects. The workshop also featured a masterclass by renowned filmmaker Yousry Nasrallah.

Throughout the workshop, participants were immersed in the challenges of filmmaking on a tight budget, emphasizing the importance of guidance and overcoming obstacles. The workshop took a hands-on approach, covering essential aspects of independent filmmaking from initial steps to effective communication. Roles within a film production were explored, along with the concept of budgeting and strategies for navigating financial limitations.

Effective communication emerged as a central theme, as participants learned how directors convey their vision to both the audience and the production team. Understanding the various roles involved in filmmaking was highlighted as essential for efficient message delivery. Participants gained basic knowledge of each role on set, empowering them to effectively direct the team while fostering collaboration.

A significant portion of the workshop focused on the role of the Director of Photography (DP). Participants delved into topics such as optics, lighting, and the creation of mood boards. Understanding the work of other roles on set was also emphasized, enhancing participants’ overall understanding and abilities as directors. Appreciating the language and requirements of other roles was deemed vital for effective communication and collaboration.

Towards the conclusion of the workshop, participants were assigned scenes from their own scripts to work on, allowing them to apply their learnings practically. The intention and approach to coverage were discussed, and limitations were set to encourage creative problem-solving. Participants collaborated with DPs to explore shooting techniques, blocking, and the creative use of natural light. This exercise demonstrated the versatility of a single location through different interpretations.

The workshop aimed to boost participants’ confidence as emerging filmmakers while honing their problem-solving skills. It culminated in a three-day practical exercise where participants worked together to shoot scenes from their scripts in a shared location. This exercise showcased the collaboration between directors and DPs, highlighting the diverse narratives that can emerge from a single setting. Focus was placed on blocking, coverage, and efficient time management on set.

The workshop schedule was carefully structured, encompassing introductory sessions, discussions on the director’s role, exploration of the DP’s / sound editor world, and practical exercises. Interactive sessions, film screenings, breakdown exercises, and hands-on activities related to lighting, sound and camera work were integrated to provide a comprehensive learning experience.
