Creative Documentaries Based On Archives
By Béatrice De Pastre

Béatrice De Pastre, head of the  Archive Department and Cinematic Heritage in the National Cinematographic and animated image Centre (CNC) has run a number of workshops hosted by Dahshur Workshops:

  • Creating with Archives , 1st-6th November 2017
  • Creative Documentaries Based On Archives, 18th-23rd April 2016

Both of the these  workshops explored how participants could select and merge archival material, video, audio or visual, in order to enrich the narrative elements of their feature documentary or fiction project, while also maintaining a structured and coherent rendering. Concerns regarding copyrights were also addressed. The workshop focused on the utilisation of old footage (film archives, amateur films or photography) and how participants can find ways to recycle this footage and use it in new works.

Re-using Images from the Past: Adding Sound to Silent Films, 7th-9th October 2017

This three-day workshop took place at Dahshur Workshops’ office headquarters in downtown Cairo. The workshop gave participants the opportunity to explore and examine images, composition, and the relationship between sound and image. Participants explored a variety of subjects and exercises including listening exercises, analysing silent short films, montage, recording sound, adding sound to image and preparing soundtracks.

Dahshur Workshops was especially excited to collab with the Ismailia Film Festival bringing a special masterclass by renowned film expert and producer Isabelle Fauvel, titled Gardening and Agriculture as a Metaphor for Film Development: Towards a Sustainable Process.

In this thought-provoking session, Fauvel explores the parallels between nurturing a garden and cultivating a film project, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices in the creative process.

The panel was attended by festival guests and young filmmakers, offering them a valuable opportunity to engage directly with Isabelle Fauvel’s insights. The session sparked meaningful discussions around creative sustainability and inspired participants to
rethink their approach to film development.

    About Isabelle Fauvel

After working as a producer for Flash Film with a focus on international co-productions, Isabelle Fauvel created Initiative Film in 1993 : the very first company exclusively dedicated to film development. Since then, she has been the privileged partner and advisor of producers and talents internationally, for all matters regarding project and talent development : scriptwriter castings, consultancies on projects at any stage of development, story editing, book scouting… providing insightful advising during the whole project incubation period. She is also involved in a number of training programmes & labs, a speaker at international universities and film schools, and has created bridges between the audiovisual and publishing worlds to facilitate literary adaptation.

Staying true to her desire to nurture the development of scripts, projects, talents and specific methods, in January 2025 Isabelle founded Silence & Conversation, a pioneering company aiming at encouraging thought and reflection on the renewal of tools designed to foster creation and the circulation of talent.
